For some children, routine dental care calls for a little extra support. Whether it is anxiety, a strong gag reflex, special needs, or simply the nature of a longer procedure, we have options to help your child get the care they need comfortably and safely. We will always discuss the most appropriate approach with you before moving forward.
Local Anesthesia
Local anesthesia is used routinely to numb a specific area of the mouth during treatment. It may be applied topically, by injection, or both. The medication works only on the targeted area and wears off within a few hours. Most restorative procedures are performed with local anesthesia, and we take care to make sure your child is fully comfortable before we begin.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is a safe, well-established option for children who experience mild to moderate anxiety about dental visits. It is inhaled through a small mask worn over the nose and takes effect within minutes, producing a relaxed, calm feeling. Some children notice a light, tingly sensation in their hands or feet. Nitrous oxide does not put your child to sleep, and the effects clear quickly once the mask is removed, making it easy to return to normal activity right after the appointment. We are happy to discuss whether it might be a good fit for your child.
General Anesthesia / Hospital Dentistry
For patients who need more comprehensive support, general anesthesia allows treatment to be completed while the child is fully asleep. This may be the right choice for children with significant dental anxiety, extensive decay requiring multiple procedures, special healthcare needs, or complex surgical treatment. Our doctors hold hospital privileges at Berkshire Medical Center, where full-mouth rehabilitation under general anesthesia can be performed when it is in the patient’s best interest. We will walk you through the benefits, risks, and what to expect so that you can make a fully informed decision for your child.
