A frenectomy is one of the most common minor surgical procedures performed in pediatric dentistry, and at Berkshire Pediatric Dentistry, we perform them using a soft tissue dental laser. For most patients, this means a quicker procedure, a more comfortable experience, and a faster recovery than traditional surgical methods.
Why We Use a Laser
Dental lasers offer meaningful advantages over traditional scalpel-based techniques for this type of soft tissue procedure. Treatment is quieter and faster, and because the laser seals tissue as it works, there is typically very little bleeding and a reduced risk of post-operative complications. Many patients require little to no anesthetic, and healing time is generally shorter. Surrounding healthy tissue is also less affected compared to conventional surgery.
What is a Frenum?
A frenum is a small band of connective tissue that attaches one soft tissue structure to another in the mouth. Most people have several of them. When a frenum is unusually tight, short, or thick, it can restrict movement in ways that cause real functional problems. A frenectomy is the procedure used to release that restriction.
We most commonly perform two types of frenectomies:
Lip Tie Release (Labial Frenectomy)
The labial frenum connects the upper or lower lip to the gum tissue. When this tissue is too tight, it can interfere with the fit of orthodontic appliances or oral devices, and in some cases, contribute to a gap between the front teeth. A labial frenectomy releases this attachment to restore normal function and support better outcomes from other dental or orthodontic treatment.
Tongue Tie Release (Lingual Frenectomy)
Tongue tie, known clinically as ankyloglossia, occurs when the frenum beneath the tongue is too restrictive, limiting how freely the tongue can move. In newborns and infants, this can make nursing difficult or painful. In older children, restricted tongue movement may contribute to speech challenges. A lingual frenectomy releases the tissue to allow for a fuller range of motion.
